FLORIDA, IN MY SHOWER: AÑORADO ENCUENTRO
I wander through Little Havana with nowhere in particular to go.
I step into the Ball & Chain for a drink and a cigar. The music is loud, people are talking, and the smoke mingles with the warm air drifting in from the street.
Then I see him. He’s there, a few feet away. He reminds me of Sergio Armas. Maybe it’s his face, maybe it’s something I can’t quite explain. We look at each other for a moment. I feel like asking him to dance a canción cubana. I don’t know who he is, where he’s from, or what he’s doing there.
And yet I find myself thinking how easy it would be to sit beside him, buy him a drink, start talking about nothing and let the night take us somewhere.I like the idea that it could happen. That two complete strangers could meet by chance and, within a few hours, suddenly feel close to each other.
Maybe that’s what I want to feel: the moment when someone stops being a stranger.
